Quiz helps to raise over £600 for the Butterfly Appeal

Moreton Hall Community Centre, Nigel Cross and Steve BaxterA quiz held at the Moreton Hall Community Centre, in Bury St Edmunds, has helped to raise funds for the Butterfly Appeal.

It was organised by club member Steve Baxter and raised a total of £312.50 which was matched by the club to lift it to £625.

The event, held between Christmas and New Year attracted 10 teams, who each paid £10 to enter, and consisted of eight people per team.

There were also some raffle prizes which helped to boost the amount of money raised.

The funds have been handed over to the My WiSH Charity, which supports the work of the West Suffolk Hospital, and Steve said: “I like to do something to raise money for My WiSH and the support I received from the club was great.”

The appeal is aimed at raising a total of £340,000 to help build a special Butterfly Garden area for end-of-life patients at the hospital as an exclusive private area so patients can spend some of their final days or hours with their loved ones.

He was treated at the Macmillan Unit at the West Suffolk after being referred to them from Addenbrooke’s Hospital, in Cambridge, when he had a bone marrow transplant back in 2107.

Steve, who is a trainer and specification manager for a national roofing company and covers the east of England and London, has organised a number of other events to support My WiSH raising £2,084 with a previous quiz night and also organised a team to take part in the first Soapbox race as Hong Kong Phooey, back in 2018, raising a total of £980.

He was helped with the latest quiz by club committee member Nigel Cross who was the quizmaster.

“I just wrote all the questions and he asked them,” said Steve. “It was a great night and people seemed to enjoy it.

“After I was transferred to the West Suffolk they closely monitored me and looked after me so well and things are going well for me now and I’m back at work.”

Sally Daniels, appeal manager, said “Steve has worked so hard to support the Macmillan unit here at West Suffolk Hospital as well as the Butterfly Appeal, and we can’t thank him, Nigel and everyone who joined them on the quiz night, enough for their amazing donations to My WiSH Charity”.
