Project 7 hands out £1,650 to My WiSH
The annual Big Night Out, held at Melford Hall, plus a series of other fundraising events have helped to raise thousands of pounds for a raft of local organisations.
And the My WiSH Charity has benefited from the work carried out by Project 7 which runs the firework spectacular every year at Long Melford.
For £1,650 has been handed over to the charity, which supports the West Suffolk Hospital, in Bury St Edmunds.
A total of £1,000 has gone to the critical care unit, £350 to the Macmillan unit, £200 to the Every Heart Matters appeal, and £100 to the G8 ward stroke unit.
In all a total of 51 cheques, totalling £18,000, were handed out at Project 7’s presentation night which was held at the Long Melford British Legion Hall.
Andrew Hagger, the club president, said: “It was quite poignant this year as one of our committee members had to be treated at the hospital recently.”
He said that since Project 7 was formed back in 1982 it has raised a total of over £700,000 for local charities which works out to just under £19,000 per year.
Mr Hagger added: “We feel that the money generated is from local people and it should stay local.
“Big Night Out last year was fantastic and was attended by between 7,500 and 8,000 people and over the year we had over 10 fundraising events ranging from car rallies to fairs and birthday parties to weddings.”
Other events the organisation is involved with include barbecues, tea, coffee, refreshments, cabaret and event management with the main event being the Big Night out in November. It also provides logistical support to other organisations.
Also at the presentation evening certificates were handed out to Roger Edwards and John Abbott for lighting the 2018 bonfire.
Roger was the first chairman of Project 7 and a member with John of the original Big Night Out committee over 50 years ago when John came up with the idea of holding the display in Long Melford and this year’s event is scheduled to be held on Friday, November 8, at Melford Hall.
Sally Daniels, My WiSH appeal manager, said: “Project 7 are an amazing group. They have worked tirelessly for 37 years fundraising and supporting local charities and we can’t thank them enough for donating to help us continue enhancing care at West Suffolk Hospital”.
