Greyhound regulars help to raise over £4,000

Fantastic fundraisers at the Greyhound pub, in Ixworth, have raised a staggering £4,505 through a variety of events.

From quizzes to crib nights and a 100-mile bike ride to a golf day it’s meant that the money has been used to purchase five special cots for newborn babes in the labour suite at the West Suffolk Hospital, in Bury St Edmunds.

The pub, in the High Street, decided to raise money for the My WiSH Charity, which supports the hospital and landlord Colin Pearce said he had nothing but praise for staff.

“They just do a fantastic job at the hospital and we have regulars who have had experience of the wonderful treatment they receive,” he said.

A series of charity quiz nights have been held which netted cash along with crib nights.

And 60-year-old Colin, who lost a leg four years ago, carried out a sponsored 100-mile bike ride in September which also helped to boost the funds.

His route took him on a big loop from the pub out to Bury, then onto Risby, Red Lodge, Soham, March, Ely, Littleport, Mildenhall and back to Bury and the Greyhound.

“It was well attended. Some can play golf while others can only belt it and drink,” he said. “But it was a great day enjoyed by all.”

He has first hand experience of the treatment and care received by patients at the hospital and said that after he lost

his leg he used the physio department at the hospital and his wife, who suffered breast cancer but now has the all clear, was also treated at the hospital.

“Every year we raise money for charity and I reckon we have raised over £55,000 in total.

“In fact we had someone come into the pub recently whose granddaughter had already used one of the cots we helped to purchase.

“People who help to raise the money here can see what we have done and there is always someone who can thank us for it and it means a great deal to us,” he added.
