Publicans support a third different hospital department

Sam Newton, Ray and Glynis Coleman, Sue and Colin PearceFundraising publicans who have donated more than £7,000 to West Suffolk Hospital have chosen a third department to support for the coming year.

Kind-hearted Colin and Sue Pearce initially supported the hospital’s physio department – as part of their traditional ‘charity of the year’ at the Ixworth Greyhound - when the landlord had to have his leg amputated after contracting an infection.

Supported by the hospital’s My WiSH Charity, they then turned their attentions to the breast care unit to say thank you for the care received by Sue.

Now after raising the fantastic total for the two departments, they will be supporting the hospital’s maternity unit, fundraising for bedside cots to ensure newborn babies stay with their mums after they have had caesarean deliveries.

Colin said: “Ever since when I lost my leg, I always wanted to give something back to the hospital after all the support they have given me and my family.

“It is great to see how our money has made a difference throughout the hospital and we are delighted to be helping it again.

“We can’t thank everyone enough for all their continued support of our fundraising at the Greyhound.”

In the past, the couple have handed over cheques for £3,315 and £4,020 for the physio department and breast care unit respectively.

And they have wasted little time in kick-starting their fundraising again with Colin completing a 110-mile sponsored cycle around Suffolk and Norfolk and the Greyhound hosting their popular monthly quiz nights, under the auspices of Ray and Glynis Coleman.

Sue Smith, fundraising manager of the My WiSH Charity, supporting the hospital, said: “We never take any of our support for granted but when a couple like Colin and Sue want to keep helping the hospital, and different departments, it is simply incredible.

“They have become renowned for their fundraising and we would like to thank this fantastic couple and all the customers of the Greyhound for their support of West Suffolk Hospital.”

The next quiz night will be held at the Greyhound on Thursday 3rd November. To find out more or to book your place, contact 01359 230887.
