First ever West Suffolk Spin raises close to £10,000 for Hospital

An inaugural charity cycle ride for all the family and supporting West Suffolk Hospital has raised around £10,000.

Organisers behind Sunday’s West Suffolk Spin, run by the My WiSH Charity’s special events committee, said they were delighted with how the event went after more than 350 riders took part.

Each participant was given the choice of whether to cycle 100, 50 or 25 miles as well as choosing one of six different areas of the Hospital to support while a free family cycle around Nowton Park was also held and included healthy educational messages along the route promoting the importance of cycling.

Paul Rayner, chair of the special events committee, said: “We are all so delighted with how our first ever West Suffolk Spin went.

“I had initially hoped for 300 riders and to raise around £5,000. So to hopefully double that figure is just incredible.

“This was the first cycling event I had been involved in and what struck me was the camaraderie among the riders – there was such a wonderful atmosphere around the whole day.

“The committee would like to thank all the riders, our main supporters Revel Outdoors, councillor Sarah Stamp who funded the family cycle ride, all our sponsors and our wonderful volunteers.”

The West Suffolk Spin was the first big event organised by the special events committee, made up of staff and members of the public alike.

The six areas of the hospital supported were women and children, cancer services, stroke services, cardiology, the emergency department or the general fund of My WiSH Charity which supports all areas of patient care.

Riders then had the opportunity to get additional sponsorship for any area of the hospital they would like to further boost the fundraising total.

When asked whether the Spin would become an annual event, Paul added: “The whole committee was overjoyed by the success of the West Suffolk Spin.

“I think it could become the jewel in the crown of the special events committee. We have been so encouraged by the positive feedback and the money raised that we will definitely be back for 2017.”
