Golf pro tackles triathlon with a difference for Rainbow Ward

PGA professional Simon Byford will be combining his love of golf with a gruelling triathlon to say thank you to hospital staff who treated his first son.

Simon will be tackling a triathlon with a difference when he swims, cycles and runs - and tackles 54 holes of golf at three different courses - all in one epic day of fundraising.

The 31-year-old is raising money for West Suffolk Hospital's Rainbow Ward who cared for his son Cameron after he suffered from prolonged jaundice after his birth in April.

Simon, the professional at the Suffolk Golf and Spa Hotel, said: "We spent the first week of Cameron's life in the Rainbow Ward.

"When you are spending a lot of time in somewhere like that, you start thinking about how you would like to help and support other children."

Simon's one-day, three-county challenge on Sunday 27 July will see him play 18 holes around Gosfield Hall Golf Club at first light.

He will then have no time to reflect on his round, as he embarks on swimming 1500 metres at the adjoining Gosfield Lake.

Turning his attentions to the saddle, he will cycle more than 40 miles from the Essex village to Thetford Golf Club where he will play another 18 holes.

He will finish the epic fundraiser with a 13-mile run from Thetford to his home course at Fornham St Genevieve before completing his final round of golf.

The day will conclude with a charity auction and raffle in the clubhouse of The Suffolk with Simon appealing for any local businesses who would like to donate an item to contact him on simonbyfordgolf@gmail.com.

He added: "I have done little golf challenges before but nothing on this scale - I am hoping to complete it within 18 hours.

"The Unit was very professional - they always knew what to say to us whatever the situation. They appreciated we were new parents and they made us feel relaxed in what was a difficult situation. I just wanted to do something different to say thank you."
