Colossal cycle challenge to celebrate 40 years

Staff, partners and tenants are set to saddle up and take on a colossal charity challenge as they complete a 171-mile cycle tour of key housing schemes across East Anglia to celebrate Suffolk Housing's 40th anniversary.

Around 25 riders have signed up for the epic fundraiser, which takes place on Thursday 5 and Friday 6 June. Setting off from Lowestoft at 7am, they will cycle to 20 of Suffolk Housing's developments, covering 112-miles and visiting towns such as Stradbroke, Eye, Ipswich and Whepstead before arriving in Bury St Edmunds around 12 hours later.

On the second day, the group will tour a further 20 developments in Bury, Elmswell, Barrow, Wickhambrook, Horringer and Depden, covering 57 miles.

The event is one of a series of celebrations planned to mark Suffolk Housing's 40th year. It has been arranged to raise funds for the neonatal unit at West Suffolk Hospital, which itself celebrates 40 years at its Hardwick Lane site during 2014.

Ian Winslet, chief executive at Suffolk Housing, said: "We wanted to do something special to commemorate 40 years of providing exceptional homes for people in housing need, and felt that raising money for a much-loved local charity was a good way of doing just that. It also seemed fitting to link up with West Suffolk Hospital in what is a milestone year for both of our organisations.

"We are delighted that so many of our staff, partners and tenants have signed up to take part in the ride. The route has been carefully designed to tour some of our key housing developments and takes in large parts of the beautiful Suffolk countryside. It will certainly be challenging, but hopefully also a lot of fun.

"We\'ve received some fantastic support so far from local businesses, including Northgate Vehicle Hire, which is providing us with support vehicles, and Les and Deb King who are printing our cycle tops for us. We\'re now hoping to raise as much sponsorship money as possible so that we can do our bit to support the fantastic work which takes place at West Suffolk Hospital to care for premature and poorly babies."

Patricia Davis, general manager and head of midwifery at West Suffolk Hospital, said: "We are delighted that Suffolk Housing has chosen to support our neonatal unit with this charity cycle ride. We\'d like to wish all of the riders the best of luck and hope that they enjoy the challenge."
